The University of Michigan’s involvement with CSCI came in the form of a personal request from a member of their national consortium’s board of directors. Larry Page, Google co-founder and U-M alumnus, personally requested the university’s involvement through President Mary Sue Coleman. As a result, U-M because one of two founding higher education members.
In March 2008, the CSCI @ U-M initiative kicked off by having the director and executive sponsors present the project vision and make requests for volunteer support. In response, more than 55 volunteers signed up to lead this charge to save our natural resources.

Staff, students, and faculty learn what activities CSCI @ U-M proposes to grow green computing practices on campus.
The CSCI @ U-M staff are charged with promoting green computing education and awareness to the entire campus. This team will oversee and guide the implementation of project activities, maintain the project web site, and support the volunteer efforts during the 2-year project.

Staff, student, and faculty volunteers from across campus work together to design initiatives for each of the nine projects. These invaluable volunteers perform the majority of the hands-on work to lay the projects' foundation and lead the way through project completion.
