Project: Unit Funding

What's Happening

All units are encouraged to be creative about green computing solutions for their area — however not all units have the budget to implement these ideas. CSCI @ U-M responded by creating Unit Funding, which has supplied grants to units with creative green computing proposals. A total of $25,000 in grant money was available in increments of $500-$5,000. To maximize results, the goal was to disburse all the grants by the end of calendar year 2008 and early 2009.

What we do

  • Encourage innovations involving information technology to positively influence the University’s impact on the environment
  • Enable small ideas to take root within a unit and possibly leverage associated outcomes across the University
  • Test the viability of “proof of concepts” that could be leveraged across the University

Bill WrobleskiBill Wrobleski, Team Lead
Wrobleski began his career at the University of Michigan in a microcomputer lab. Since 2000, Wrobleski has been the director of Technical Infrastructure Operations for Information and Technology Services. Because Wrobleski has built his career in IT at the University, he has seen the increase in costs and complexities associated with powering and cooling computers. He recognizes the drain on the University’s resources and our natural resources. Wrobleski thinks the volunteer project teams are truly committed to making a difference and he is excited about the project’s efforts.
